..chronically....May 28, 2006
"Are you chronically insane or is this an acute attack?"The inquisitor is a nurse and she frequently uses words like chronic and acute. She sits across the table from me biting her lower lip. I've just argued my preference for crushing deaths over heavy equipment warning beeps. I expressed the view with both conviction and a bottle of red wine. Now I ignore what I hope was a rhetorical question and refill her glass with Pinot Noir.
I met my companion on 9-11. Yes, that 9-11. She was standing in line at the LifeShare Blood Center, waiting her turn to donate blood. On television, I had seen the towers collapse and I knew blood wouldn't be needed. So I was at the blood center collecting cleaning supply donations.
"Can I put you down for an 8-pound Oreck?" Those were the first words I spoke to her. In retrospect, I see it wasn't the best available opening line, but things have a way of working out.
