..the dabbler

....July 2, 2004

When I'm not dabbling in the humanities, I dabble in science.  When I'm not dabbling in science, I dabble without context.

As a child, I pretended to be a super-hero known as The Dabbler.  The Dabbler's super power was his inability to master any subject or hone any skill.  Boldly he rejected specialization and scoffed at expertise preferring, instead, general knowledge and the odd barroom trick.  The Dabbler was a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.  He confounded his enemies with quick-enough wit, an almost-sharp pen, and above average soul.

I can still remember the villains like Jockboy, Professor Handsome, and Scholar Face.  The Dabbler left them scratching their heads and grabbing their asses.  Even now, I reconjure The Dabbler from time to time.  And when I do, I wouldn't want to be Expertman, Dr. Doctor, Captain Connoisseur, or Crackerjack.
