March 25, 2002 snow white
When I sit in my backyard facing the park, I feel like Snow White. And I'm not just talking about the gowns I wear or my habit of skipping around singing falsetto. The birds are so tame they often construct flower garlands and place them on my head. The squirrels fetch my slippers.
I made some clear hummingbird food and put it in a feeder without adding red dye. Hummingbirds like red and I wanted to find out whether they would discover my feeder without the coloring and whether others would follow suit. Within minutes, a Buff-Bellied Hummingbird showed up, took a hit, and flew off. He came back with several friends proving, once and for all, that word-of-beak advertising really works.
