August 16, 2001 two thumbs down Have you ever noticed how Hollywood makes Being Sad seem cool ? When people in movies have their hearts broken or some tragedy befalls them, they become real attractive.   The clothes they put on in a vacant daze are tragically hip, not too neat and not too shabby.   Like they're walking around in a movie based on the J Crew catalogue.   No matter how bad the weather is, you wish you were in it.   And regardless of what has happened---divorce, terminal illness, death---there's some plaintive, romantic music playing which, in turn, makes the characters more beautiful, the weather more inviting and the clothes more chic.   When I see these Sad People, I start praying for sadness. Then it comes. It catches you in real life. And you realize it is decidedly uncool to be sad.
